Water Flow Regulator Still Spirits Guide: Setup, Use & Cleaning
The Still Spirits Water Flow Regulator is one of the simplest upgrades you can make to your home distilling setup — and one of the few that genuinely changes the quality of what comes off your still. If your cooling water flow fluctuates mid-run (and on most Australian household plumbing, it does), your spirit cuts shift with it. This guide walks you through what the unit does, how to set it up, how to dial in your flow rate, what to do when something goes wrong, and how to keep it running for years.

1. What the Water Flow Regulator actually does
Distillation is a temperature-controlled process. The cooling water running through your reflux column or condenser is what pulls heat out of the rising vapour — and the flow rate of that water determines how aggressively heat is removed. Get it right and your cut points (heads, hearts, tails) are predictable run after run. Get it wrong and you’ll be chasing temperatures, second-guessing collection rates, and ending up with inconsistent spirit.
The Still Spirits Water Flow Regulator is a closed-loop water management unit. Instead of feeding mains-pressure water straight through your still — which fluctuates every time someone in the house flushes a toilet, runs the dishwasher, or turns a tap — it draws water from a 1 litre reservoir that’s continuously topped up by a float valve. A built-in pump then delivers that water to your still at a steady rate you set with a control knob.

3. How to set up your Water Flow Regulator
Setup takes about five minutes the first time, and less than two minutes for every run after that.
Step 1 — Attach the hoses
1. Take the supplied hose and connect one end to a tap using the appropriate adaptor (kitchen, garden or laundry — all included).
2. Attach the other end to the inlet at the back of the Water Flow Regulator and tighten the hose clamp finger-tight.
3. Connect your still’s water inlet hose to the metal barbed fitting on the front of the regulator.
Tip: Laundry taps usually give the most reliable mounting position — kitchen taps work but can get awkward if you’re running a four-to-six hour distillation.
Step 2 — Fill the reservoir
1. Open the tap to fill the reservoir. The float valve will stop the flow once the reservoir is full.
Do not start the pump before the reservoir is filled.
2. Running the pump dry is the most common reason a unit fails prematurely.
Step 3 — Start the pump
1. Once the reservoir is filled and your still hoses are connected, plug in and switch on the pump.
2. Water will start moving through your still’s condenser or reflux column.
Step 4 — Set your flow rate
Use the control knob on top of the unit to adjust the flow rate. Most stills need only small adjustments — turn it gradually rather than fiddling with big movements. See the next section for typical flow rates.
4. Dialling in the right flow rate
Refer to your still’s manufacturer instructions for the precise flow rate, but as a general guide for common setups:
Still Spirits T500 Reflux — approximately 1.5–1.8 L/min during the run, lower (around 0.6–0.8 L/min) during the start-up warm-up phase
Pot stills with copper condensers — approximately 0.8–1.2 L/min depending on the size of your condenser
Alembic pot still domes — typically 1.0–1.5 L/min
The simplest way to verify flow rate is to time how long it takes to fill a measuring jug from the outlet hose. If 1 litre takes 60 seconds, you’re at 1.0 L/min. Easy.
One common adjustment: if your reflux column gets hot at the top and you start losing spirit out of the vent, your flow rate is too low. Bump it up slightly and give it a minute to stabilise before adjusting again.
5. Why this matters for spirit quality
The honest answer to “do I really need a water flow regulator?” is: you can run a still without one, but the day you forget to check the cooling water mid-run because someone started a load of washing is the day you lose 200 ml of hearts. Specifically:
Consistency between runs
The regulator lets you set the same flow rate every run. That means the temperatures behave the same way, your collection rates are predictable, and your cut points happen when you expect them to. If you’re refining a recipe or trying to replicate a good run, this consistency is invaluable.
Less spirit lost to bad cuts
Inconsistent cooling water is one of the most common reasons home distillers lose spirit in the heads or tails. Stable flow gives you stable temperatures, which makes cut decisions clearer.
Less water wasted
A regulator uses only as much water as the still needs — no more, no less. Compared to running an open hose for hours, the water savings over a year of regular distilling add up.
Set and forget
Once you’ve set the flow rate, the unit looks after itself for the rest of the run. You can focus on managing your collection and making cut decisions rather than babysitting a tap.
6. Troubleshooting common issues
The pump isn’t working
Check the reservoir is filled — pumps will not run dry. If it’s been run dry, give it a moment to cool, refill, and try again.
Check the power cable and outlet (try a different powerpoint to rule it out).
Listen carefully — if the pump is humming but no water is moving, there’s likely an air lock. Disconnect the outlet hose briefly to let it prime.
Flow rate is inconsistent or stutters
Inspect the inlet tap. If your household water pressure is very low, the float valve may not refill the reservoir fast enough to keep up with the pump.
Check for kinked hoses — easy to miss if your setup runs around a corner.
Clean the tubing and reservoir (see the cleaning section below). Mineral buildup in hard-water areas can restrict flow over time.
Water leaking from connections
Tighten hose clamps. They sometimes loosen with thermal cycling — check them every few runs.
Inspect hoses for cracks, especially around the barb fittings. Tubing is consumable; replace it if it looks tired.
Reservoir overflows
The float valve is most likely stuck — usually from a small piece of debris. Drain the reservoir, lift and lower the float a few times, and rinse it out. If it’s permanently stuck, contact us or the manufacturer for a replacement float.
7. Cleaning and long-term care
Mineral buildup and biofilm in the reservoir or hoses will cause flow rate issues over time. A clean every 5–10 runs (or whenever you notice flow getting twitchy) is enough to keep it in good shape.

Mild dish soap, or white vinegar diluted 1:3 with warm water

Step-by-step cleaning
Power off and disconnect. Turn off the pump, unplug from mains, and disconnect every hose attached to the regulator.
Drain the reservoir. Tip the unit upside down over a sink to empty any remaining water.
Rinse. Rinse the inside of the reservoir with warm water to remove loose debris.
Wash with cleaning solution. Mix mild dish soap into warm water (or use the vinegar dilution for descaling), and use a soft brush or cloth to clean the inside of the reservoir. Pay extra attention to the float valve and any areas showing buildup.
Clean the hoses. Submerge the hoses in the cleaning solution. A small bottle brush helps with the insides. Rinse thoroughly with clean warm water afterwards.
Rinse and air dry. Give every component a final rinse with clean water, then let everything air dry fully before reassembly. Sealing damp components in storage is a fast track to mildew.
Reassemble and test. Reconnect the hoses, refill the reservoir, and run the pump for a minute to check flow is steady and there are no leaks.
Storage between runs
Store the unit dry, with hoses disconnected, in a cool dry place.
If you live somewhere that drops below freezing, drain the unit fully before any cold snap — water in the pump or hoses can crack components.
Inspect hoses and clamps every 5–6 runs and replace anything looking worn.
