Cork or screw cap, Burgundy or Bordeaux — here’s how to choose and seal the right wine bottle.
Standard wine bottles are 750ml, which take any standard cork or Novatwist screw cap. They come in classic shapes — Burgundy (tall, sloping shoulders) and Bordeaux (straight, high shoulders) — usually chosen to match the wine style, though either works for home bottling.
Natural corks are cut from whole cork bark — premium, flexible and ideal for wines you’ll age for years. Agglomerate corks are made from bonded cork granules — cheaper and perfectly reliable for wines you’ll drink within a year or two. Both need a corker to insert; choose based on how long the wine will be cellared.
A Novatwist is a reusable screw cap that fits a standard wine bottle and seals by hand — no corker required. It’s a modern alternative to cork that reseals after opening, which makes it a favourite for home winemakers who want convenience and a clean finish, especially for everyday drinking wines.

Only if you’re using corks — a corker compresses and inserts the cork into the bottle neck. If you use Novatwist screw caps instead, you don’t need a corker at all; they seal by hand. So your choice of closure decides whether a corker is needed.
Yes — clean, sanitise and inspect them for chips around the rim first. Reused bottles are perfect for home winemaking. If you’re re-corking, a fresh cork each time is best; Novatwist screw caps can be reused as long as the seal is sound.
