Activated carbon (AC), also known as activated charcoal, works through a process called adsorption, which is key to its ability to purify and clean substances like air, water, and even alcohol.
Here’s how it works:
1. Surface Area and Porosity
AC has an incredibly high surface area due to its porous structure. A small amount of AC (just a few grams) can have the surface area equivalent to several football fields. These tiny pores trap and hold molecules from the liquid or gas it comes in contact with.
2. Adsorption
When alcohol or another substance is passed over or through AC, molecules in the liquid (such as impurities, contaminants, or unwanted chemicals) stick to the surface of the carbon particles. This is called “adsorption” because the impurities are bound to the surface of the AC, not absorbed into it.
- Impurities: In the case of alcohol, AC can remove unwanted chemicals like sulfur compounds, phenols, and other impurities that cause off-flavors or odors. It also helps to refine the clarity of the liquid.
3. Removal of Odors and Off-Flavors
AC is particularly effective at eliminating odors and off-flavors in liquids like alcohol because it traps volatile compounds (like those responsible for strong smells) in its pores. This is why it’s used to purify spirits, remove harsh chemical flavors, and create smoother, cleaner-tasting beverages.
4. Capacity to Remove Impurities
Activated carbon works best when it’s given time to interact with the liquid. The longer it soaks in the alcohol (or any other liquid), the more impurities it can adsorb. However, its capacity is not infinite, and eventually, the carbon becomes “saturated” and needs to be replaced or regenerated.
