One of the best ways to improve your Beer Kit; or Hopped Extract Tin; is to add additional hops via steeping or dry hopping. These hop bags are the perfect, low cost alternative to buying the ready-made Morgans or Mangrove Jack 12g and 15g hop bags.
Simply buy your preferred pelleted hops in a 100g bag and then fill the hop bags yourself. Once filled, tie the bag with the string and you are ready to steep or dry hop your wort. Traditionally, between 10 and 20g of pelleted hops will be used per 23L batch however, use as much as you like or multiple bags of various hops you can control the flavour or style of your beer to your taste or to any recipe you are trying to replicate.
Use as follows: Steeping – for aroma and bittering hops – Add the filled hop bag to 250mls of boiling water in a mug and let it steep for 10 minutes. Then add the hop bag and the steeped water directly to your fermenter prior to pitching the yeast.
Dry- Hopping – for aroma or fruit hops – Just add the filled hop bag directly to your fermenter on day 2 of fermentation and leave it there right through to racking or bottling.
Cost comparison to commercial filled hop bags: Based off a 14g filled hop bag vs. 12g filled Morgans Hop Bag:
- 100g Hop – $7.95 (Note: price varies depending on hops used)
- 7 x 14g (total 98g) = $1.14 per fill
- 10 x Bags = $2.00 or $0.20 each
Filled 14g hop bag = $1.34 vs Morgans 12g bag $3.90 that is just over 1/3 the price of the commercial equivalent. That is a saving of $2.56 under this scenario per use!
